Latest news - CIVICUS World Assembly - three FREE places for SCVO members

SCVO’s international work focuses on the following:

1. Building the capacity of Scottish voluntary organisations to operate more effectively
at an international level and to gain more from their international connections and activities.

2. Developing awareness and facilitating learning about the common challenges and interdependence of civil society at home and across the world, including encouraging lesson-sharing with colleagues doing similar work in other parts of the world.

3. Showcasing Scotland’s voluntary sector to international audiences, and improving the sector’s level of credibility as international players.

4. Influencing European social policies for the benefit of the Scottish voluntary sector and those we serve and represent.

5. Applying SCVO’s experience as a national cross-sectoral umbrella body to assist counterpart civil society associations outside the UK.

6. Establishing Scotland as an active and supportive international centre for the promotion and development of civil society, including offering secretariat services and a ‘virtual base’ for international civil society networks

The next series of three CIVICUS World Assemblies (www.civicusassembly.org) begins in Montreal this August.

The overall theme of the CIVICUS World Assembly is 'Acting Together for a Just World'. In 2010 the focus theme will be 'Seeking Out Solutions'. This theme will address the issues of Economic Justice, Development Effectiveness, and Climate Justice. Six cross-cutting themes will influence the programmatic activities. These are:

1.Human rights

2.Social responsibility

3.Inclusive and participatory governance

4.The participation of women

5.The participation of young people

6.The participation of indigenous people

SCVO hosted the World Assemblies in Glasgow from 2006-8 to bring new ideas into Scotland; to develop our understanding of the global context of our work; and to promote Scotland as a key player in global civil society development. To build on the legacy for Scotland, SCVO is pleased to be taking a delegation from Scotland to participate in the 2010 event in Montreal.

If you are interested in applying for one of three free places being made available by SCVO to its member organisations, please email fiona.talcott@scvo.org.uk by Friday 16 July 2010 to explain:

1.How you would take full advantage of participating in this international engagement for your own and the Scottish voluntary sector’s long term benefit;

2.What key areas you are working on where international learning could help us with new approaches and solutions.

3.Your interest(s) in the international arena.

This professional development opportunity will also include meetings with Quebecois voluntary organisations. The visit will take place between 18 and 25 August 2010. Further details can be obtained by emailing fiona.talcott@scvo.org.uk.
